7/24/2009 After stopping by the Snug Harbor and seeing how crowded it was on a Friday night (ridiculous for that place), we decided to go to the Hideaway. My friend has been there many times but it was my first time. We walked in and there was a total of 8 people between the pool table and the bar. It was the Hawaiian theme night. Once we sat down at the bar, the bartender was very friendly. She told us about all the specials and gave us each a lei. The jukebox was playing a mix of currently popular songs, country, and those oldies but goodies. Because we like all of that, we minded our own business and just sang along with the music and made conversation amongst ourselves.
I eventually had to pee and went off to the bathroom. O so nasty. I like dive bars so I have experienced a lot of nasty bathrooms but this one takes the cake. I suggest peeing before you get there and not peeing til you leave. It was probably more sanitary to pee outside than inside.
Now as to the people, its definitely the bros and bro-hoe's discussed in other reviews of this place. While I ignored them, they definitely run that place and think that they are hot as shit. I think people forgot to mention that the 909 should stay in the 909. However, anyone we came into contact with were friendly.
I recommend this place if you like dive bars, you live close, you want a cheap strong drink and you arent scared of bros. Three star rating only because the bartender was so outstanding.

4/16/2009 EWW EWWW EWWW EWW is all I have to say! I was dragged there one night by some friends and honestly this place is disgusting! The night crowd is a young crowd, but it's made up of bros and bro-hoes. From what I hear, everyone who goes there is a regular...but I'm not sure why. I know it's a dive bar but damn! I was afraid someone would hit me on the back of the head with a bottle at any minute. Basically, if you're bro or bro hoe, an old man, or part of the garbage pail of lakewood high school alumni, you'll enjoy this place. Anyone else just shudders at the thought of it! The only good things I have to say is that the drinks were cheap and the bartender was a sweetheart.

12/30/2008 i ended up accompanying my buddy to make some glassware purchases at the store next door on a sunday afternoon. as all shopping excursions should ideally end, we decided to step in to replenish our souls.
snuggly trimmed in wood walls and adorned with vintage beer-related memorabilia, it's a dive bar in all its glory. the service was adequate, seeing as how we requested beers and seconds later the beer was flowing.
in typical dive bar fashion, the bar sported a couple plastic dart machines and a juke box to those musically inclined. it also seems that the bar has the usual regulars. although we didn't talk to any of them, they seemed friendly enough, allowing us to toss a few back in their home away from home.
there it is, the quick and dirty lowdown. for some odd reason, though, i feel like i'm not doing this bar any justice. but hey, a dive bar is a dive bar is a dive bar. it's the atmosphere itself that defines a dive. unfortunately, you have to go there to experience the atmosphere itself.

5/26/2008 I'm giving the Hideway 5 stars because it is 5 stars in my book....why? because I can walk there! No DUIs for me! This place is a total dive bar, it's really gross. I only go when my friend comes into town because she knows everyone there. Everytime we go there is a fight, usually some old chick beating on her man for one reason or another. I suggest you sit with your back to the wall and throw back shots because you need to sterilize your system in case you need to use the bathroom. Us girls go in pairs because there is a hole in the second bathroom door, so you have to hover over the seat while also pinning the side of your foot over the hole to (1) cover the hole (2) keep people from walking in because there is also no lock. If you get home without contracting "the hep" congratulations, you just survived the Hideaway. =)

5/18/2009 My band played there Sat. - 1st time being there. Divey as it gets & small enough to have a good sized crowd w/30 people. Perfect spot for local punk acts, which they host often......for free!
I have to admit my favorite part of the evening was watching the obnoxious, in your face, drunken hippy get his ass kicked by a girl....while we played.
Fun times!

2/22/2009 Place is great, never had a problem. Throw some great punk shows and their freee!!! Drinks are little pricey so I suggest you buy a drink across the street at the LIquor store and drink in the parking lot. Great atmosphere...love the baby buffalo head on the wall. Place has been there since the 50's.

12/28/2008 Aaahhh, Harold's. You are a dive and a half, and I love it.
Husband's band plays here somewhat often, and I feel slightly uncomfortable every time I'm there. Maybe because of the huge fight I helped break up not knowing there was a knife in the dude's hand, maybe because they serve drinks in a Dixie cup, or maybe because I just can't get used to a smokey bar.
Cheers to the cool bands I've seen (including Mike Watt and Tijuana Knife Fight), the bartender wearing a tube top who swears she's heard me sing, jello shots, and the surprisingly kinda clean toilet.

10/2/2008 Feeling a little down? No worries, the women with no teeth are ready to cheer you up! This place first crashed into me when I was booking an outsider band from Hollywood, Rappers to be exact. They were literally the only place in San Pedro not to big for their britches, by that I mean they welcomed this trio with open arms and guess what? NO PAY TO PLAY!
Well I should have seen trouble coming when I first walked in to the joint, dark, quiet and some strange dude whispering to himself and he really didn't look like he was into rap music! Hell! I am not into rap music, but I had a job to do and I did it well!
It was a different story though, when my beautiful bomb shell singer and her two Tu-PAC look-a-likes walked in, I think think she started crying maybe? No worries, that bar came to my rescue and in a hurry! The bartenders were at my feet every second attempting to accommodate my "VIP" peeps, yeah that was the funny part, and comp'd drinks left and right in an attempt to keep the singer from having a panic attack, which by the way was going to be inevitable anyway.
These cats were from an upscale side of Hollywood and this place is definitely in the downside part of Pedro...so you do the math. So I guess you are dying to know how it went, right? Well it went off like a smash considering every redneck, homeless guy, toothless woman in San Pedro was the audience...they LOVED us! Thanks to that bar and there hospitality and warm welcome to outsiders, it went pretty darn smoothly. That last guy was right too, hanging from the rafters is acceptable...Ladies bring BIG guys with you though.

8/20/2007 Dirty on the outside. Dirty on the inside. This is a place where I feel pretty comfortable spitting on the floor (or vomiting in the alley) and never blink an eye worrying about the repercussions.
I've been here several times for band shows (punk, punk, and more punk!) and always have a great time. San Pedro has a fairly vibrant punk scene, and Harold's' Place is doing their part to support and keep it thriving (or at least they deal w/ it well). I haven't the slightest idea how to tell you what bands are playing or when, but most weekends are booked DIY-style w/ at least one interesting local or touring band (sometimes 3 or 4). Weekends have a very friendly but rowdy crowd and most are welcoming to strangers. Don't live in Pedro? Don't worry about it, foo!
I'll ONLY come for bands cuz the weekday regulars are a little too sketchy for me. Yes, the neighborhood is a little dark, but don't worry about it. If you're going to get stabbed in Pedro, it'll probably be at the Alhambra Room, NOT at Harold's. But if (as mentioned in other reviews) you're a lady, you might want to bring some dudes. Dudes with beards.
Oh, and NO DANCING! Hanging from the rafters is apparently OK though.

5/30/2006 If you want a small, dark dive bar with cool locals who accept you for who or what you are, you've found it. The drinks are as stiff as the old mens levi's who gawk at you from across the room. Not the best part of San Pedro so bring some men along. they also have awesome punk shows on the weekends.

7/1/2007 Harold's has the weird guy that offers to take a polaroid picture of you and whoever you are with, for only 5 dollars. Harold's also has a vibe all its own. It's a working class bar with serious fangs. Sometimes there is music there, sometimes the regulars bring a buffet dinner and other food. Beware, many of the people I have met here just got out of jail. But what the hell, it's a place to go and drink and melt the night away with the legendary feeling of San Pedro Dive Bars, the likes of which Charles Bukowski used to frequent, and several equally interesting cats still do.

5/6/2007 I think it's ironic that a place this dirty on the inside is damn near sparkling white on the outside. Such are the contradictions about San Pedro.
Great punk scene for local bands and some out of towners. Watch yourself when you leave and at night on the nearby streets. This isn't the friendliest of neighborhoods and this isn't the most cheerful of crowds.
