I'd like to say thank you to all who came out to Mark StJohn's benefit. Thanks also, to all who donated online to his cancer recovery. What we did was tremendous and really made a difference in his life. With your help we have raised enough money to cover all of his medical bills. This was amazing and with all my heart I truly thank you!!

I also want to thank everyone who came out for Joe Houston's benefit. I know that both Mark & Joe are more appreciative than they can say. Joe & Mark both are doing well.

I'll keep everyone posted on both of their progress but for now....thank you for all your love and care of these two bluesmen, that I have loved for many many years.

You were great! Thanks. Jill

THE COVER OF RANDOM LENGTHS MAGAZINE - Article

Jill Sharpe’s Sunday
Blues Jam at Ashley’s

link: http://www.randomlengthsnews.com/images/IssuePDFs/2011-may/rl_ace_05-05-11.pdf

Random Lengths News dropped by Ashleys in Long Beach to check the ongoing Sunday blues jam featuring blues guitarist Jill Sharpe. As with many nondescript bars that run through the Harbor Area, you can’t tell what to expect from the outside. If you walk straight into the bar, you’ll find that it expands out and into what appears to be an old diner. The room itself is bleak, with old green vinyl
booths. Somehow it all became timeless. The diversity cut across all social lines, young and old.
Ashley’s has a nice menu and the burgers are good. Since food is being served, minors can come in
under supervision. On any given day you might see children playing pool with parents. Mind you,
this is not the local family eatery, it is a bar. The music that Sharpe and her group for that evening played, set the vibe for the night. Sharpe opened with a set of blues favorites and proceeded
to tear the room up. Jill Sharpe has a very vivacious yet sultry kind of Peggy Lee personality. She parlays this into being a very good jam master for running this kind of event. There were
guitar-slingers, harp (slang for harmonica) players, vocalists and one smoking sax player. A song
that stood out as a tongue in cheek blues tune was called “Bad, Bad Kitty.” The gist of it is” Come
on over you dog, and hear this kitty purr. This was followed by a song, “Funkin A” a southern fried
rocker with a smoking Wah-Wah intro. Towards the end of Sharpe’s first set, she played a slow blues This is Home (A song about life on the road), this woman can sweet the honey out of each note played.

Random Lengths News spoke with Jill Sharpe in a coffee clatch early the next morning.
RLn: How long have you been doing this jam at Ashleys.
Jill Sharpe: We have been doing this since last October.
R L n: Te l l u s a b o u t t h i s j a m s e s s i o n .
JS: What stunned me the most about this jam; I have hosted several, is the diversity of players that
come in (Sharpe has been hosting jams for over 20 years). We have players as young as 10 to 17
years old. These are some of the best players I have ever seen in my life. I have them up there
with professional musicians, some of whom are up over 60 years old. They have played all their
lives, they come from all over the country and from all over the world. We had a 10-year-old guitarist
named Ray Gorem come in a couple of weeks ago, who could play Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray
Vaughn and play them better than most of the guys I have ever seen. During the second set of the jam a young woman came up whose name is, Deborah, who played a barn burning version of Rock Me Baby.”
JS: There was this young woman who was there last night and she is playing the Chicago Blues
Festival this year. We have whole bands that come. Bands from Brazil and England who have come
and played at Ashley’s. In the second set Robert Dean replaced Jill on guitar and Danny Ray of the defunct Long Beach band The Road Dogs played the Muddy Watersclassic, “Hootchie Coochie Man” and Buddy Guys “Damn Right, I Got The Blues.”

RLn: I met the guitarist Robert Dean last night, he came up in the the second set with his harp
player from The Road Dogs.

JS: I loved those guys, they are friends with my new guitar player Dave Albert who just came
down from Oregon. Dave Albert traded solos with both Sharpe and Robert Dean and every time this cat stepped up he could blow until there was no tomorrow.
Every Sunday, starting at 5 p.m., Jill Sharpes Blues Jam at Ashley’s is definitely a place to be. Former KLOS Radio personality and comedy club host Gino Michellini was there taking in the sounds at the Sunday jam. According to Sharpe he is putting her music in rotation on his show at www.turntables.com.
J i l l Sha rpe i s s e l l ing he r mus i c through www.reverbnation.com/JillSharpe and is in the process of putting out a new compact disc due in a couple of months. Robert Dean who has taught guitar for more than 30 years and is a writer for Southland Blues has guitar instruction on YouTube Robert D e a n B l u e s G u i t a r. F o r m o r e i n f o g o t o
www.jillsharpe.com. Venue: Ashleys Location: 1731 E. 4th St., Long Beach Details: (562) 495-5700

We put together this concert to give back a small portion of that incredible generosity and show him and his family our support. We hope anyone who can relate to his incredibly unique life story—or just someone who wants to see an amazing show—will join us at the Satelllite Lounge.”

ABOUT MARTY:

Marty Nation, a California native, was born in Northern California, moved to Hollywood, and then Topanga's "rodeo grounds" where he attended grade school in Malibu. His generation were the real life Spicoli kids that Sean Penn spoofed in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Only Marty wasn't a stoner or a beach bum. He and rockabilly rebel Colin Winski combed their hair into duck tails, wore leather jackets and listened to Elvis, The Stooges, The Ramones, and other bands not yet realized by their peers in the 1970s. Marty discovered glitter and The Dolls, and became somewhat of a legend himself in Hollywood,
with notorious stories told about him by visitors to Hollywood's punk rock royalty house, "Disgraceland."
So many who know Marty have a tale to tell about him. He's the guy we all wished we had the guts to be, only it would take showing our darker sides to the world, and not many have those guts. It was Marty who kicked the door down and let the flood of kids in to see The Ramones the night the riot squad was called out to the Palladium in early ”˜80s. The kids weren't having a riot at all. They just wanted to get in. It must have been at capacity, and the fire marshals were holding everyone back. Marty just kicked the door in and let everyone all
flood the Palladium. It was a rollicking show and nobody got hurt, but on the way out, helicopters flew over, and police were out with billy clubs to give those punks a good beating for violating the fire code.
A motorcycle enthusiast by the age of 10, Marty raced speedway, drove classic cars, and played in a garage band (The Reptiles) with his brother Johnny. While still in his early 20’s, Marty went on tour as roadie to Levi & The Rockats, then came back to Los Angeles to work in auto mechanics and hairdressing. He opened his own salon, The Martin Nation Salon, and was known for "foxifying" his clientele. He also formed a band, Crowbar. An '80s garage band pile-up, featuring pals Peter Andrus, Drew Steele of the Surf Punks, Ace Farren Ford and Hermann Senac of Blood on The Saddle, with an an earlier lineup including Wayne James and Andy Seven. They released an album titled Crowbar Salvation.
After meeting wife Catherine, and having baby Molly Jo, the family moved east, where Marty attended The French Culinary Institute in NYC, and launched yet another career as a chef. They moved back to California, where Marty opened his own restaurant The Iron Pan in Ojai, based on is mother's old iron pan. Now living at the beach with wife Catherine and two dogs, things came to a screeching halt when Marty hit scaffolding that was dumped on the 134 freeway near Los Angeles, as he was riding his motorcycle at 60 mph. He survived, but has had to endure extensive surgeries. With another 18 months left to recover and another hip replacement on the way, his family is grateful for the support shown by so many who have pulled together for Marty.
Family and friends have organized a web site and silent auction. Candye Kane has spearheaded benefit performances for Marty, where she'll be performing, along with Julie Christensen, Marty's brother Johnny Nation and his band City Fritter, The Ben Powell Band, featuring Candye’s son Evan Caleb, The Vampowers with Peter Andrus, Stereo Blues with Tony Marisco, The Jill Sharpe Band, The Bloody Brains with Hermann Senac, with special highlight Daniel Ash of the Bauhaus as DJ.
The people whose lives Marty has graced do not forget him. As the Shaheen family recently posted on Marty's Tumblr page (www.martynation.tumblr.com), "Marty was always there for anyone in need and he was there on 9/11 when thousands lost their lives”¦he was
one of the first to answer when there was a need to feed the thousands of men who were on the scene to dig through the rubble looking for suvivors”¦he provided food for the unsung heroes, for he was a hero himself”¦he cooked nonstop for days and nights providing over 150,000 hot meals to the char-faced firemen who came into his tent for a warm meal”¦yes Marty, I will not forget what you did for these men”¦.you never once complained about the conditions at Ground Zero”¦.you did what you had to do, and you did it your way”¦.I have so much respect for you”¦"

# # #

For more information, please contact:

Candye Kane
