"TAKE ONE"
After years of recording with other bands, Take One is Jill's first recording as The Jill Sharpe Band. Engineered by Wade Wilkinson (Sublime - 40oz to Freedom engineer) this was the first of many recordings with Jill & Wade at the helm. Featuring world renowned slide guitarist Buzzy James and OC Symphony's 1st accoustic bassist Fred Charleton, with Patty Ambs on Guitar and Dave Calhoun on drumset. This was Jill's first original blues recording with great covers like "Folsom Prison Blues" and Elvis' "Come Back Baby Wanna Play House". This is a great live recording and all the songs were done on the first take...hence the name..."Take One". Enjoy!

I think my parents expected perfection. After taking ballet classes, Ice Skating and tap, my debut on television, was at four years old. I made my first record when I was 7, got my first guitar at eight and was getting out of class by 9 to play for all of the other classes in school. I guess you could say I was destined to be a performer. I wrote my first song Crybaby Blues, left home and started my first band, at age 15. That same year I moved into Frank Zappa’s old recording studio, then owned by Pat Wartink. It housed approximately 7 studios, with musicians galore. I was watching Randy Rhodes almost nightly and hangin with the Van Halen, Quiet Riot, Yankee Rose and Motley Crew boys at about 16. At 17, I started playing guitar for a band called The Gumby’s. I was kidnapped on my 19th birthday at the Starwood in Hollywood, (after receiving a Siamese ring as a birthday gift from The Guess Who), by Michael Debarr, my friends did nothing and said “let him, he’s a Rock-Star”. I then started playing with an all girl Pop band Tiger Lily, opening for bands like The Ventures, The Bangles, Fear, and The Ramones. I played speed metal with Flesh Weapon, Glam with The Flame Throwers and Surf in more chick bands. Grew up a little and joined a political ska/punk band in San Diego, re-joined Tiger Lily (again) and alas, it was time to start the Jill Sharpe band. This seemed the place to stay, and stay I have. 10 years later I’m still going strong and Lovin’ Every Minute of it! Hope you enjoy listening to this CD - We sure had fun making it.
This CD was my first attempt as a solo artist. I was green and had a lot to learn, though my instincts, once again, proved better than most veterans. This is a respectful tribute to some of the men and women who taught me the meaning of Good Music. It was just a start, but as you can tell by the song selection, I knew who the greats were. Walter Trout wrote the song, Life in the Jungle, about a girl he knew. As usual, things took an odd twist. As Walter and I took a turn on our bicycles, around the block in downtown Huntington Beach, he nodded past me and said “That’s Life in the Jungle”. My mouth fell open….after repeating what he had just said, I let him know……”Walter, that’s where I live”… I had already recorded the song. Johnny Cash has always been a hero. I even asked Billy Zoom to sign the Johnny Cash picture I carried everywhere. He drew little hearts all over it and needless to say, I wore it out keeping it in my wallet for so many years. He played, sang and wrote, like my Grandpa, God Bless you Johnny and June. Ricky Lee Jones is one who just oozes soul. When it came to learning what a sexy voice was, between Peggy Lee and Ricky Lee Jones, there was no question where my influences were coming from. Last but certainly not least. As any kid who was born after WWII, we knew who gave us Rock and Roll. They accused him of playing black music and wouldn’t air his songs. Well, so he did, and I’m happy to say, so do I. Thanks Elvis for breaking the ground for us mixed up kids that don’t know what color we are. Most of all……who cares! Enjoy, this is a really Fun, Rockin’ CD. They called me “One Take Jill” – So what else could I call it, but…….Take One.
